Mel was a lifetime member of Northminster Baptist Church as well as a member of the Men's Ready Sunday School Class for more than thirty years. He was a graduate of the 1944 class of old John Marshall High School and was a member of F Company in the John Marshall Corps of Cadets. Following high school, he served for two years in the United States Navy, being honorably discharged in 1946. Upon returning to Richmond, Mel went to RPI (VCU) graduating in 1950 with a BA degree in Business Administration. He worked for Southern Biscuit Company in the Caribbean area, for Colgate Palmolive, and in 1963 went to work for Sun Life Assurance of Canada, retiring in 1987. During his career, he qualified for numerous insurance Leader awards. Mel, from the time he was a child, loved raising homing pigeons, and later in life, exotic pheasants and water fowl. He was an avid gardener with a special interest in growing banana plants. Their travels included an African Safari to Tanzania, white water rafting down the Colorado River, Gauley River and exploring the Galapagos Isles. Mel was present for a celebration of his life on April 14, 2012, at his home. Services will be held at Woody Funeral Home - Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville, at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012, followed by a Service of Inurnment at Signal Hill Memorial Park, Dr. Charles B.
